Residents of Dorchester, Massachusetts, have established The Pear Square Collaborative Inc. to maintain the public art of Edward Everett Square and foster its public enjoyment as a cultural amenity. The organization raises funds to support improvements, maintenance, landscaping, beautification and public art projects in the Square and in other public spaces in the Edward Everett Square vicinity. It also supports educational and cultural initiatives for promoting knowledge and understanding of Dorchester’s history and community experience evoked by themes manifest in the public art. It sponsors cultural events and programs, with particular focus on the study and exploration of Dorchester's community history.
Its mission thus comprises the twin goals of reclaiming Edward Everett Square’s beauty and significance as an urban gateway, as well as its historic significance expressed through public art and community history. By way of public art, we hope to create for our neighborhood an ambience of beauty and culture. By way of Dorchester community history, we hope to create a path to empathy and shared culture and trust across the extraordinary diversity of Boston’s largest neighborhood.
